Browne says Antiguans have paid ‘nearly a million dollars’ for his ‘initial’ Alfa Nero legal bill

“Nearly a million dollars in fees.” That is how much the lawyers defending Gaston Browne, his family members, and his cronies in the Alfa Nero case have presented in their “initial” bill.

Browne confirmed in an interview on Pointe FM that the Antigua and Barbuda government has paid the lawyers at taxpayer expense.

Browne confirmed in an interview on Pointe FM that the Antigua and Barbuda government has paid the lawyers at taxpayer expense.

In the interview, posted on Antigua Newsroom, Browne said that the country’s taxpayers will have to pay for the tax bills for “myself” and for “other public servants” (including his wife, whom he does not mention).

“Just as in the case of myself and other public servants” that “the government had to pay to defend the litigation, otherwise they get a judgment in default.”

The West Indies Oil Company was billed US$200,000.

The Antigua and Barbuda government’s initial bill was US$136,000.

“That’s nearly a million dollars in fees because of irresponsible politicians in this country.” Browne did not disclose the other figures.

“So far we have won all of the cases,” Browne claimed. “And even if in the unlikely event the Russian lady was to win her case, that’s a totally different issue compared to the propaganda that they fabricated. It’s two different issues, you know. The Alfa Nero issue is still in the Antigua court being litigated. It is not resolved as yet. Not fully resolved. Totally different thing that was done out of spite, in which members of the opposition” made up, he said, of “lies.”
